Diagnosis - July 19, 2026

Yawgmoth had a much better week in results than its Pro Tour representation suggests. Only two of the 362 players at Pro Tour Marvel Super Heroes registered Golgari Yawgmoth, but Toni Portolan finished the Modern rounds at 6-4 with a classic no-Chord Cauldron/GSZ list. Outside the Pro Tour, barczek finished second in a 114-player Challenge, NickBolas90 finished fourth in a Challenge, and the archetype added several League 5-0s and Challenge 5-2s.

The clearest conclusion is that classic Cauldron/GSZ Yawgmoth remains the best-supported build. The successful lists are mostly on 4 [[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]], 3 [[Walking Ballista]], 4 [[Agatha’s Soul Cauldron]], 3 [[Green Sun’s Zenith]], 3-4 [[Malevolent Rumble]], and 2-3 [[Dredger’s Insight]], with no [[Chord of Calling]].

The Pro Tour field was especially concentrated around Boros Energy, Izzet Affinity, Broodscale Combo, Eldrazi Tron, and Esper Goryo’s. Those five decks made up 55.8% of the field. Yawgmoth should prepare primarily for Izzet artifact decks and fast combo while avoiding excessive changes for Boros Energy and Eldrazi Tron, which remain favorable matchups in the available matchup data.

Notes on the lists

barczek is the best benchmark from the week. The list plays 4 [[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]], 3 [[Walking Ballista]], 4 [[Agatha’s Soul Cauldron]], 3 [[Green Sun’s Zenith]], 4 [[Malevolent Rumble]], 2 [[Dredger’s Insight]], 1 [[Ignoble Hierarch]], and 1 maindeck [[Witherbloom Charm]]. Xerk played the same configuration to another 5-2 finish in the same 114-player event.

Toni Portolan brought essentially the same structural plan to the Pro Tour: 4 Yawgmoth, 3 Ballista, 4 Cauldron, 3 Green Sun’s Zenith, 4 Malevolent Rumble, 3 Dredger’s Insight, and a maindeck Witherbloom Charm. The 6-4 Modern finish is solid rather than exceptional, but it is the strongest evidence available from the highest-level event of the week.

NickBolas90 supplied the actual innovation. The July 16 League 5-0 and July 18 Challenge Top 4 both used [[Mole Man, Moloid Master]], [[Icetill Explorer]], [[Shifting Woodland]], and [[Ghost Quarter]]. The repeated result moves this package from a single experimental League list to a credible branch worth testing.

Jrcitizen used [[Essence Warden]] as a one-copy green bullet in a July 19 League 5-0. This is a low-cost experiment for creature races, but one result is not enough to call it stock.

Jconn remained on the 3-Yawgmoth utility configuration with [[Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER]] and [[Virulent Emissary]]. The sideboard’s [[Sheoldred’s Edict]] is a new one-of, but the evidence is currently limited to one 5-2 result.

Some tournament databases are grouping Samwise/Birthing Ritual decks under Yawgmoth. SGMY95 won a July 18 Challenge with a Samwise/Cauldron Familiar shell containing only one Yawgmoth. NotATurtle also went 5-0 with a similar hybrid. These are successful decks, but they should not be treated as evidence for changes to classic Golgari Yawgmoth.

How Yawgmoth adapted this week

The archetype has moved back toward a clear default: no Chord, four Yawgmoth, three Ballista, and maximum Cauldron/GSZ/Rumble density. This configuration produced the second-place Challenge result, the Pro Tour 6-4, and most of the week’s League finishes.

[[Witherbloom Charm]] is increasingly a maindeck card rather than a miscellaneous sideboard option. It appeared in the main deck of barczek, Xerk, Toni Portolan, and DB_Wishful14. Its flexibility is valuable in a field where Yawgmoth must answer cheap permanents, survive aggressive starts, and convert expendable permanents into cards.

[[Endurance]] is also moving into the main deck. fclyra, Jrcitizen, TheMeatMan, JohnGranvik, NickBolas90, and several paper lists used a maindeck copy, sometimes with a second in the sideboard. Esper Goryo’s was 9.1% of the Pro Tour, and Living End remains present, so free graveyard interaction is rarely dead enough to leave entirely in the sideboard.

The NickBolas90 package changes the mana base from passive fixing into a small value engine. Mole Man and Icetill Explorer replay lands from the graveyard, Ghost Quarter becomes repeatable interaction, and Shifting Woodland gives the deck a late-game use for a stocked graveyard. The cost is one fewer Spymaster’s Vault and slightly more pressure on already complicated land sequencing.

The sideboards are otherwise converging. The most common structure is 2-3 [[Fatal Push]], 2-3 [[Thoughtseize]], 2 [[Force of Vigor]], 1-2 [[Vexing Bauble]], 1 [[Culling Ritual]], 1 graveyard bullet, and one or two flexible slots.

Decks pressuring Yawgmoth

Izzet Affinity / Izzet Metalcraft is the highest-priority matchup. It is one of the largest decks in the broad metagame, tied for the largest deck at the Pro Tour, and one of Yawgmoth’s most consistently poor matchups. Keep hands that interact early; slow engine hands are not enough.

Izzet Prowess is similarly urgent. Prowess remains one of the largest decks in the general metagame and punishes slow starts, fetch-shock sequencing, and hands that rely too much on Yawgmoth resolving. [[Fatal Push]] is essential, and life-total management matters more than preserving every engine piece.

Ruby Storm remains the most important pure-combo matchup. [[Thoughtseize]], [[Damping Sphere]], and [[Vexing Bauble]] are the relevant cards, but hands still need a clock.

Eldrazi Bloodchief Combo is currently one of the larger combo decks in the broad metagame. Cheap interaction for the creature half of the combo is more important than trying to grind.

Simic Neoform deserves more preparation after taking 3.9% of the Pro Tour field. The warning is simple: this is another matchup where Yawgmoth cannot rely on assembling a turn-four value engine without disruption.

Esper Blink and Azorius Control remain difficult lower-volume matchups. [[Tourach, Dread Cantor]], extra Grist, and discard are the most relevant current experiments.

Boros Energy and Eldrazi Tron are highly represented, but the available matchup data is more favorable for Yawgmoth than the Izzet and combo matchups. Prepare for them, but do not let those decks consume sideboard slots needed for Izzet and combo.

Sideboard cards overperforming

[[Fatal Push]] is the most consistent three-of in successful lists. It is the main answer to Prowess, Energy, Broodscale, Bowmasters, and other cheap creature engines.

[[Thoughtseize]] remains the broadest answer to Storm, Neoform, Reanimator, control, and combo. Successful lists are split between two and three copies; the third is justified when the room is heavy on spell-based combo or countermagic.

[[Force of Vigor]] is nearly universal as a two-of. The Pro Tour’s 12.7% Izzet Affinity share reinforces that choice.

[[Vexing Bauble]] is still present in almost every sideboard, usually as one or two copies. It is not carrying the Storm matchup by itself, but it remains broad enough to keep.

[[Culling Ritual]] appears repeatedly as the one-card reset against Energy, artifact boards, tokens, and low-cost combo permanents. One copy remains the normal quantity.

[[Endurance]] is the most successful card moving between main deck and sideboard. The best configuration currently looks like one main and, when graveyard decks are expected, a second in the sideboard.

[[Kraul Harpooner]] appeared in the fclyra, Jrcitizen, and Jconn sideboards. Its repeated use is a real signal, particularly with large flying threats and Neoform decks in the field.

[[Tourach, Dread Cantor]] is the most interesting narrow sideboard experiment. NickBolas90 used two copies in the July 16 5-0 and one copy in the July 18 Challenge Top 4. It is aimed at white removal, Blink, and control rather than the open field generally.

New or newly relevant cards in Yawgmoth lists

[[Mole Man, Moloid Master]] is now the most credible new card. It allows lands to be played from the graveyard and creates a disposable Moloid token on landfall. That provides extra bodies for Yawgmoth while making fetchlands and Ghost Quarter into recurring resources.

[[Icetill Explorer]] is part of the same package. The additional land drop and ability to play lands from the graveyard increase the value of fetchlands, Ghost Quarter, Malevolent Rumble, and Dredger’s Insight.

[[Shifting Woodland]] gives the package a late-game payoff. Once delirium is active, it can temporarily copy a permanent from the graveyard, turning a land slot into another potential engine card.

[[Ghost Quarter]] is not new to Modern, but playing one main and one side is new enough for this Yawgmoth shell to matter. It is strongest when Mole Man or Icetill Explorer can replay it.

[[Essence Warden]] appeared as a one-copy green bullet in Jrcitizen’s 5-0. It is inexpensive to test, but it has only one result.

[[Sheoldred’s Edict]] appeared in Jconn’s 5-2 sideboard. It provides an answer to larger creatures and planeswalkers that [[Fatal Push]] may miss, but there is not yet enough evidence to prefer it over [[Murderous Cut]] or [[Pile On]].
