Yawgmoth had a quieter week in raw volume, but the two meaningful classic results both reinforce branches that were already developing. The_Yoda finished 9th at 5-2 in the 101-player August 21 Modern Challenge with the two-[[Chord of Calling]] shell, while NickBolas90 went 5-0 in the August 20 League with the lands package built around [[Mole Man, Moloid Master]], [[Icetill Explorer]], [[Shifting Woodland]], and [[Ghost Quarter]].

The broad 30-day numbers remain respectable: MTGDecks currently has Golgari Yawgmoth at a 53% win rate. The important shift is in the matchup spread. Izzet Metalcraft, which had been one of the deck’s persistent problems, is now favorable in the recent sample at 58%. The problem matchups are increasingly concentrated around Izzet Prowess, Eldrazi Bloodchief Combo, Amulet Titan, Living End, and the Blink/control decks.

The newest piece of Yawgmoth-specific technology is [[Pawpatch Formation]]. NickBolas90 played two copies in the sideboard of the 5-0 lands build. Its combination of flyer removal, enchantment removal, and a fail-safe draw-a-card mode makes it unusually low-risk as a flexible sideboard slot.

Notes on the lists

The_Yoda repeated the same basic Chord configuration that had already made Top 8 of a 90-player Challenge the previous week. The main deck is 3 [[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]], 3 [[Walking Ballista]], 4 [[Agatha’s Soul Cauldron]], 3 [[Green Sun’s Zenith]], 3 [[Malevolent Rumble]], 2 [[Chord of Calling]], 1 [[Dredger’s Insight]], and singleton utility creatures including [[Endurance]], [[Orcish Bowmasters]], [[Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER]], [[Ignoble Hierarch]], [[Formidable Speaker]], [[Grist, the Hunger Tide]], and [[Ouroboroid]].

The_Yoda’s sideboard is especially clean: 3 [[Fatal Push]], 3 [[Thoughtseize]], 2 [[Force of Vigor]], then one each of [[Culling Ritual]], [[Damping Sphere]], Endurance, [[Fulminator Mage]], [[Guerrilla Gorilla]], [[Soulless Jailer]], and [[Vexing Bauble]]. The repeat Challenge finish makes this the best-supported configuration to start from if playing the Chord branch.

NickBolas90 continues to refine the lands build. This version has 3 Yawgmoth, 3 Dredger’s Insight, 1 [[Mole Man, Moloid Master]], 1 [[Icetill Explorer]], 2 [[Shifting Woodland]], one maindeck Ghost Quarter, and another Ghost Quarter in the sideboard. The move to two Shifting Woodland is notable: the land is now being treated as a real secondary engine rather than a singleton experiment.

The sideboard is where NickBolas90 made the week’s genuinely new move. It plays 2 [[Pawpatch Formation]] alongside 2 [[Ashiok, Dream Render]], 2 Fatal Push, 2 Force of Vigor, 3 Thoughtseize, 2 Vexing Bauble, Guerrilla Gorilla, and the second Ghost Quarter.

Tournament databases again list Sam_Lewin and Zoru under Yawgmoth during this period. Those decks are Samwise/Birthing Ritual shells with four [[Samwise Gamgee]], four [[Birthing Ritual]], four [[Cauldron Familiar]], four Chord, and only one Yawgmoth. They should continue to be treated as a separate adjacent archetype rather than evidence for changes to classic Golgari Yawgmoth.

How Yawgmoth adapted this week

The biggest conclusion is that the two-Chord branch survived another week of testing. The_Yoda followed last week’s Top 8 with a 5-2 finish in a larger 101-player Challenge while keeping the same basic 3-Yawgmoth, 2-Chord, 1-Insight structure. That is stronger evidence than a single spike and makes Chord the best-supported current alternative to the four-Yawgmoth no-Chord builds.

At the same time, NickBolas90’s lands shell continues to produce. The package is now coherent enough to describe as a separate build: Mole Man and Icetill Explorer enable land recursion, Ghost Quarter becomes reusable interaction, and two Shifting Woodland give the mana base a meaningful late-game engine.

[[Dredger’s Insight]] remains unsettled rather than disappearing. The Chord list plays one; the lands build plays three. The zero-Insight Bowmasters/Grist list from last week did not produce another published result this week, so there is not yet enough evidence to call that version the new default.

[[Endurance]] remains one of the most stable maindeck flex cards. It appears in both successful classic lists and continues to cover Living End and Reanimator without requiring a completely dead game-one slot.

Decks pressuring Yawgmoth

Izzet Prowess remains the highest-priority common bad matchup. Yawgmoth is at 40% over 20 matches in the current 30-day data. It is also one of the largest decks in Modern. Cheap interaction and careful life-total management remain mandatory.

Eldrazi Bloodchief Combo is 41% over 17 recent matches. The matchup rewards Fatal Push, Thoughtseize, and fast development more than slow grind pieces.

Amulet Titan is 38% over 13 matches. This is now a more convincing problem than the very small control samples. Thoughtseize, Fulminator Mage, and Ashiok are the cleanest existing tools.

Living End is 38% over eight matches. The sample is still small, but the matchup has remained poor for several consecutive weeks. Main-deck Endurance plus additional graveyard interaction remains justified.

Esper Blink is 38% over eight recent matches and deserves extra attention because the archetype is performing extremely well right now. Esper Blink won the August 22 Modern Challenge 64, and another Esper Blink deck won the smaller August 22 Challenge. The matchup punishes overextension with exile removal and sweepers while also presenting a strong long game.

Azorius Control remains only 17% over six matches. The sample is too small for the number itself to be reliable, but the direction is consistent with Yawgmoth’s broader difficulty against sweepers and repeated exile effects.

Izzet Metalcraft is no longer showing up as a bad matchup in the recent numbers. Yawgmoth is currently 58% over 24 matches. Metalcraft remains common enough that two Force of Vigor should stay in the sideboard, but there is no current statistical case for devoting additional slots specifically to it.

Boros Energy, Esper Reanimator, Ruby Storm, and Eldrazi Tron are currently at 54%, 52%, 60%, and 57% for Yawgmoth. They are important practice matchups but not where additional sideboard space is most urgently needed.

Sideboard cards overperforming

[[Thoughtseize]] is the clearest point of agreement between the successful branches. Both The_Yoda and NickBolas90 play exactly three.

[[Force of Vigor]] is equally stable at two copies. Even with the recent improvement in the Izzet Metalcraft matchup, the archetype remains one of the largest decks in the field and continues to put copies into Challenge Top 8s.

[[Fatal Push]] is still the primary tool for Izzet Prowess and Eldrazi Bloodchief Combo. The_Yoda uses three while NickBolas90 uses two, making the third copy a metagame-dependent flex slot rather than an automatic inclusion.

[[Endurance]] remains excellent because it can start in the main deck. The_Yoda supplements the maindeck copy with another after sideboarding; NickBolas90 keeps one main and uses other graveyard tools such as Ashiok after board.

[[Ashiok, Dream Render]] is particularly attractive in NickBolas90’s current configuration because it overlaps Amulet Titan, graveyard strategies, and search-heavy combo while fitting a sideboard that is already trying to attack lands with Ghost Quarter.

[[Pawpatch Formation]] is the new flexible option. For two mana at instant speed it can answer a flying creature, answer an enchantment, or replace itself while creating a Food token when neither removal mode is relevant. Two copies in a League 5-0 are enough to make it worth testing, but not enough to call it stock.

The latest Challenge results also reinforce the need to respect white interaction. Esper Blink won both August 22 Challenges, and Solitude-heavy decks were prominent throughout the larger event. Avoid treating the matchup as a simple race; preserving resources through the first wave of exile removal is important.

New or newly relevant cards in Yawgmoth lists

[[Pawpatch Formation]] is the clear new Yawgmoth-sideboard signal this week. NickBolas90 played two copies in the August 20 League 5-0. Its attraction is flexibility: unlike narrow flyer or enchantment hate, it can always cash itself in for a card and a Food token.

[[Shifting Woodland]] is not new to the archetype, but the move from one copy to two in NickBolas90’s latest 5-0 is meaningful. The lands package is increasingly treating Woodland as a core part of the secondary engine.

[[Chord of Calling]] also gains another week of evidence. The_Yoda’s second strong Challenge finish with the same two-Chord shell makes this look much less like a temporary metagame experiment.
