Yawgmoth had its strongest week in several weeks. NickBolas90 and TheMeatMan both went 5-0 in the September 4 MTGO Modern League, Taylor Worden finished 5-2 in the 103-player $1K Modern RCQ at SCG CON Dallas, and PETRICHOR21 finished fourth at 6-3 in the 73-player August 30 Modern Challenge.

The most important development is not simply the number of finishes. The [[Mole Man, Moloid Master]] / [[Icetill Explorer]] / [[Shifting Woodland]] / [[Ghost Quarter]] package has now spread beyond NickBolas90. TheMeatMan’s September 4 5-0 uses the same land-recursion engine, making it much harder to dismiss as a single-pilot preference.

The broad archetype remains healthy. MTGDecks currently reports a 53% 30-day win rate for Golgari Yawgmoth. The current bad-matchup cluster is concentrated around [[Izzet Prowess]], Boros Energy, Eldrazi Bloodchief Combo, Amulet Titan, Living End, and the Blink/control decks. Izzet Metalcraft, previously one of Yawgmoth’s largest problems, is currently favorable in the available 30-day sample.

Notes on the lists

TheMeatMan supplies the clearest structural signal of the week. The 5-0 list plays 3 [[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]], 3 [[Walking Ballista]], 4 [[Agatha’s Soul Cauldron]], 3 [[Green Sun’s Zenith]], 3 [[Malevolent Rumble]], 3 [[Dredger’s Insight]], 4 [[Badgermole Cub]], 1 [[Mole Man, Moloid Master]], 1 [[Icetill Explorer]], 1 [[Endurance]], 1 [[Formidable Speaker]], 1 [[Ouroboroid]], 4 [[Young Wolf]], 1 [[Strangleroot Geist]], and 4 [[Delighted Halfling]].

The mana base makes the plan explicit: a maindeck [[Ghost Quarter]] and [[Shifting Woodland]] turn land slots into utility, while Mole Man and Icetill Explorer let the deck extract value from lands in the graveyard. This is the first important evidence that NickBolas90’s lands package is transferable to another successful pilot.

TheMeatMan’s sideboard is also notable. It contains 2 [[Abrupt Decay]], 1 [[Ashiok, Dream Render]], 2 [[Fatal Push]], 2 [[Force of Vigor]], a second Ghost Quarter, 1 [[Outland Liberator]], 1 [[Soulless Jailer]], 3 [[Thoughtseize]], and 2 [[Vexing Bauble]]. There is no [[Culling Ritual]] or [[Damping Sphere]] in this configuration.

NickBolas90 also went 5-0 on September 4 and again used Mole Man and Icetill Explorer. Nick remains the primary developer of the lands configuration, but the significance of this week’s result is that the same engine now produced a second 5-0 in another pilot’s hands on the same publication day.

Taylor Worden finished 5-2 in a 103-player paper RCQ. The published card data confirms [[Dredger’s Insight]], [[Virulent Emissary]], [[Ashiok, Dream Render]], and [[Outland Liberator]]. The result gives Yawgmoth a meaningful paper finish in addition to the two League 5-0s.

PETRICHOR21 provided the week’s best Challenge conversion, finishing fourth at 6-3 in the August 30 73-player Modern Challenge.

MTGGoldfish also groups some Samwise/Birthing Ritual lists under Yawgmoth. Those decks should continue to be treated as a separate adjacent archetype when they are built around [[Samwise Gamgee]], [[Cauldron Familiar]], [[Birthing Ritual]], and only a singleton Yawgmoth.

How Yawgmoth adapted this week

The lands engine has moved from credible alternative to serious contender for the default shell. The key evidence is TheMeatMan’s adoption of the package. Previously, repeated NickBolas90 finishes established that the configuration worked for its principal pilot; now another established Yawgmoth player has independently posted a 5-0 with Mole Man, Icetill Explorer, Shifting Woodland, and Ghost Quarter.

The package also clarifies the role of [[Dredger’s Insight]]. TheMeatMan plays three copies, and both September 4 5-0 lists appear among the latest successful decks using Insight. The earlier zero-Insight Bowmasters/Grist experiment has not displaced the enchantment. In the lands shell, milling lands is not incidental downside: it feeds the land-recursion plan.

The conventional two-[[Chord of Calling]] branch is not dead, but it did not produce the headline results this week. The strongest current evidence has shifted toward land recursion rather than Chord.

[[Endurance]] remains a strong maindeck singleton. Esper Reanimator is the largest archetype in the broad metagame, Living End remains unfavorable for Yawgmoth, and Endurance is flexible enough to avoid being a narrow game-one card.

Decks pressuring Yawgmoth

Izzet Prowess remains the highest-priority common matchup. Yawgmoth is at 44% over 18 matches in the current 30-day data, and Prowess is the second-largest archetype in the broad Modern metagame. Two Fatal Push is the minimum; the third remains reasonable when expecting a Prowess-heavy room.

Boros Energy has moved into the unfavorable group at 44% over 16 recent matches. This is a meaningful change from earlier summer snapshots where Yawgmoth was clearly favored. Do not assume the matchup remains comfortable based on older data.

Eldrazi Bloodchief Combo is 42% over 19 recent matches. Cheap removal plus discard remains the correct plan; slow engines are less valuable if the opponent can assemble a compact creature combo first.

Amulet Titan is 40% over 10 matches. [[Ashiok, Dream Render]] remains especially attractive because it overlaps Titan, graveyard decks, and other search-heavy strategies.

Living End is 40% over five matches. The sample is small, but the matchup has repeatedly appeared on the wrong side of Yawgmoth’s ledger. Keep the maindeck Endurance and additional graveyard interaction after sideboarding.

Esper Blink is 33% over six recent matches, while Azorius Control is 33% over three. Those samples are small, but they remain consistent with the structural difficulty of beating repeated exile removal and sweepers.

Izzet Metalcraft is currently favorable at 60% over 10 matches. It remains a Tier A archetype, so two [[Force of Vigor]] should remain, but there is no current reason to overload the sideboard with additional artifact hate.

Esper Reanimator is exactly 50% over 28 recent matches, the largest matchup sample on the current Yawgmoth page. Ruby Storm is favorable at 67% over 12, while Eldrazi Tron is 54% over 13.

Sideboard cards overperforming

[[Thoughtseize]] remains the cleanest point of agreement. TheMeatMan plays three, and it continues to cover Prowess-adjacent interactive decks, Eldrazi combo, Amulet, Reanimator, Storm, and control without requiring a dedicated slot for each matchup.

[[Force of Vigor]] remains a stable two-of. Izzet Metalcraft’s matchup numbers have improved, but the deck is still a Tier A archetype and artifact strategies remain common in League results.

[[Ashiok, Dream Render]] continues to gain evidence. It appears in both NickBolas90’s and TheMeatMan’s September 4 5-0 configurations and in Taylor Worden’s paper 5-2. Its current overlap against Amulet, Reanimator, Living End, and search-based combo is unusually efficient.

[[Abrupt Decay]] is the most interesting sideboard shift in TheMeatMan’s list. Two copies provide unconditional low-cost permanent interaction without leaning entirely on Fatal Push or Force of Vigor. One successful list is not enough to make two copies stock, but the configuration is worth watching.

[[Outland Liberator]] also appeared in TheMeatMan’s 5-0 and Taylor Worden’s 5-2. The tutorable creature body remains attractive now that successful lists want artifact/enchantment interaction without devoting every slot to noncreature spells.

The opposing sideboards remain saturated with cheap stack interaction. [[Consign to Memory]] appears repeatedly across the September 5 Challenge field, while [[Mystical Dispute]], [[Vexing Bauble]], [[Surgical Extraction]], and [[Wrath of the Skies]] remain common. Yawgmoth should continue to avoid overcommitting its entire plan to one expensive spell or one board state.

New or newly relevant cards in Yawgmoth lists

There is no genuinely new printing entering Yawgmoth this week.

The important change is validation of the land-recursion package by a second successful pilot. [[Mole Man, Moloid Master]], [[Icetill Explorer]], [[Shifting Woodland]], and [[Ghost Quarter]] were already established as NickBolas90 technology; TheMeatMan’s 5-0 substantially strengthens the case that the package is broadly useful rather than pilot-specific.

[[Abrupt Decay]] is newly relevant as a two-copy sideboard package in TheMeatMan’s 5-0. It is the one established card whose role changed enough this week to deserve dedicated testing.

[[Pawpatch Formation]] does not appear to have advanced its case this week. It was the emerging sideboard card of the previous two reports, but the strongest September 4 list we can inspect instead uses Abrupt Decay and Outland Liberator for flexible permanent interaction.
