·1018 words·5 mins

Classic Golgari Yawgmoth had a relatively quiet week, but fclyra posted a 5-0 in the October 2 MTGO Modern League with a configuration that pulls back from several of the recent experiments. The list has no [[Chord of Calling]], no [[Mole Man, Moloid Master]] / [[Icetill Explorer]] lands package, and no blue splash. Instead it plays 4 [[Malevolent Rumble]], only 2 [[Dredger’s Insight]], and 2 [[Orcish Bowmasters]].

At the edge of the weekly window, Nagaya Kazuki made Top 4 of a 22-player paper event on September 27. The broader Yawgmoth archetype is currently at a 52% 30-day win rate.

One data-cleaning issue is increasingly important: several recent online lists labeled “Yawgmoth” by aggregation sites are actually Samwise/Birthing Ritual decks with only a singleton Yawgmoth. Those should not be used to infer changes to classic Golgari Yawgmoth.

Notes on the current list
#

fclyra plays 3 [[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]], 3 [[Walking Ballista]], 4 [[Agatha’s Soul Cauldron]], 3 [[Green Sun’s Zenith]], 4 [[Malevolent Rumble]], 2 [[Dredger’s Insight]], 2 [[Orcish Bowmasters]], and 1 [[Grist, the Hunger Tide]]. The creature core remains otherwise familiar: 4 [[Badgermole Cub]], 4 [[Delighted Halfling]], 4 [[Young Wolf]], [[Endurance]], [[Formidable Speaker]], [[Ouroboroid]], [[Virulent Emissary]], and [[Strangleroot Geist]].

The mana base is completely conventional Golgari. There is no [[Ghost Quarter]], [[Shifting Woodland]], [[Mole Man, Moloid Master]], [[Icetill Explorer]], [[Breeding Pool]], or other splash land. This is the strongest current evidence against treating either the land-recursion package or the recent blue splash as mandatory.

The sideboard is broad rather than concentrated: 1 [[Abrupt Decay]], 1 [[Ashiok, Dream Render]], 1 [[Culling Ritual]], 1 Endurance, 2 [[Fatal Push]], 2 [[Force of Vigor]], 1 Grist, 1 [[Guerrilla Gorilla]], 1 [[Kraul Harpooner]], 2 [[Thoughtseize]], and 2 [[Vexing Bauble]].

How Yawgmoth adapted this week
#

The most important development is a return to a simpler Golgari shell.

Recent successful builds had pushed toward three or four Dredger’s Insights, the Mole Man/Icetill Explorer lands package, or a small blue splash for [[Consign to Memory]]. fclyra instead trophies with 4 Rumble, 2 Insight, and 2 Bowmasters while omitting all three of those packages.

That does not prove the lands engine or blue splash was wrong. It does show that the archetype has not converged on them. The current evidence supports treating roughly five to eight maindeck and sideboard slots as genuinely flexible rather than assuming there is one solved post-summer configuration.

Three Yawgmoths remains the stable count. The fourth copy has largely disappeared from recent successful lists as Cauldron, Rumble, Insight, Bowmasters, Grist, and utility creatures compete for space.

[[Dredger’s Insight]] remains an important engine card, but this week’s trophy is evidence against automatically moving to four. A 4-Rumble / 2-Insight split is again a serious option.

Decks pressuring Yawgmoth
#

Esper Blink remains the clearest established bad matchup. Yawgmoth is currently around 39% over 18 recent matches. The matchup combines repeated exile removal, sweepers, and a strong late game, so threat pacing and preserving the ability to rebuild remain more important than maximizing speed.

Izzet Prowess is around 46% over 35 matches. This is the largest current unfavorable sample and keeps cheap removal important.

Izzet Metalcraft is around 44% over 18 matches. The matchup is one reason two Force of Vigor remains difficult to cut, and fclyra supplements them with Guerrilla Gorilla and Abrupt Decay.

Eldrazi Bloodchief Combo is around 47% over 30 matches. It remains both common and slightly unfavorable, rewarding Fatal Push and Thoughtseize.

Amulet Titan is around 20% in the current sample, but that is only five matches. The exact percentage is not reliable, although the matchup has remained below even in several consecutive weekly snapshots. [[Ashiok, Dream Render]] is still the cleanest overlapping sideboard card.

Living End is currently 50% over four matches. That is too little data to conclude the matchup is fixed after several previous poor snapshots. A maindeck Endurance plus additional graveyard interaction remains sensible.

The favorable side currently includes Boros Energy, Eldrazi Ramp, Eldrazi Tron, Domain Aggro, and Esper Reanimator. Sideboard space should remain concentrated on Blink, Prowess, Metalcraft, Bloodchief, and Amulet rather than over-correcting for those favorable matchups.

Sideboard cards overperforming
#

The best-supported current package is 2 [[Force of Vigor]], 2 [[Vexing Bauble]], 2 [[Fatal Push]], and 2 [[Thoughtseize]]. fclyra’s trophy list uses exactly that structure and then fills the remaining seven slots with high-overlap one-ofs.

[[Ashiok, Dream Render]] remains the most efficient dedicated Amulet/search hate because it also overlaps graveyard strategies.

[[Guerrilla Gorilla]] is especially well positioned when Izzet Metalcraft is both common and unfavorable. Pairing it with two Force of Vigor gives the deck substantial artifact interaction without using every sideboard slot on noncreature spells.

[[Abrupt Decay]] continues to earn a singleton slot as flexible permanent interaction. Four-copy Decay packages have appeared recently, but this week’s 5-0 moves back toward one.

[[Endurance]] remains valuable as a second copy after sideboarding because Living End and Reanimator are still large enough parts of the field to require graveyard coverage.

[[Consign to Memory]] remains one of the most-played sideboard cards across Modern, but its Yawgmoth-specific case did not strengthen this week. The latest classic Yawgmoth trophy returned to straight Golgari rather than repeating the Breeding Pool splash.

New or newly relevant cards in Yawgmoth lists
#

There is no new Yawgmoth card breaking through this week.

The useful signal is structural rather than a new inclusion: 4 [[Malevolent Rumble]], 2 [[Dredger’s Insight]], and 2 [[Orcish Bowmasters]] in a straightforward Golgari shell. That configuration pushes against the recent tendency toward four Insight or the lands package.

The recent [[Consign to Memory]], [[Bridgeworks Battle]], and [[Spore Frog]] experiments remain legitimate options, but none received new independent confirmation from this week’s strongest classic Yawgmoth result.
