Classic Golgari Yawgmoth had one 5-0 Modern League finish on October 21 by Athenani. The list moves back toward straightforward Golgari: three [[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]], three [[Walking Ballista]], three [[Orcish Bowmasters]], three [[Dredger’s Insight]], three [[Malevolent Rumble]], two [[Green Sun’s Zenith]], and one maindeck [[Outland Liberator]]. It contains no [[Chord of Calling]], [[Mole Man, Moloid Master]] land-recursion engine, or blue splash.

The metagame news is less favorable. [[Basking Broodscale]] strategies lead the current two-week field, and the published-list sample for Yawgmoth was 82-130-4 across 216 matches, equivalent to 38.7% wins excluding draws. This is a specific sample of published lists, not the win rate of every Yawgmoth match on Magic Online. The central preparation problem remains overlapping pressure from Broodscale/Eldrazi Bloodchief, Esper Blink, Izzet Metalcraft, and Izzet Prowess.

There is no newly printed breakout card in this week’s successful Yawgmoth list. The actionable deckbuilding change is moving a familiar tutorable artifact/enchantment answer, Outland Liberator, into the maindeck.

Athenani Golgari Bowmasters with maindeck Outland Liberator

MTGO Modern League · October 21 · 5-0

3 Bowmasters, 3 Insight, 3 Rumble, 2 Green Sun's Zenith; Outland Liberator main; 3 Fatal Push and 2 Force of Vigor sideboard

Spellbinder / Magic Online

The most recent verified earlier benchmark is Moorehardcore’s October 11 Modern Challenge Top 8 (5-2), which used a similar straight-Golgari Bowmasters plan with four Rumbles, three Insights, and no lands recursion. That finish lies outside the current weekly reporting window; it is included only to establish that Athenani’s result reflects an ongoing configuration rather than an entirely new shell.

Some websites label four-[[Samwise Gamgee]] / four-[[Birthing Ritual]] / one-Yawgmoth lists as “Yawgmoth.” Those are Samwise Combo, not classic Golgari Yawgmoth, and are excluded from this week’s Yawgmoth results.

Athenani’s exact 75 and implications
#

The October 21 5-0 has the conventional engine of four [[Agatha’s Soul Cauldron]], four [[Badgermole Cub]], four [[Delighted Halfling]], four [[Young Wolf]], three Ballistas, three Yawgmoths, and one [[Grist, the Hunger Tide]]. Its distinctive utility choices are three [[Orcish Bowmasters]] and one [[Outland Liberator]] main; one each of [[Endurance]], [[Formidable Speaker]], [[Ouroboroid]], and [[Strangleroot Geist]] round out the toolbox. Two Zeniths, three Rumbles, and three Insights provide selection without a separate engine.

The mana base has two [[Boseiju, Who Endures]], three [[Spymaster’s Vault]], three [[Overgrown Tomb]], one [[Underground Mortuary]], fetchlands, basics, and [[Dryad Arbor]]. There is no [[Ghost Quarter]] or [[Shifting Woodland]]. In particular, the land-recursion plan is not part of this result.

The sideboard is:

  • 3 [[Fatal Push]]
  • 2 [[Thoughtseize]]
  • 2 [[Force of Vigor]]
  • 1 each [[Vexing Bauble]], [[Abrupt Decay]], [[Soulless Jailer]], [[Ashiok, Dream Render]], [[Endurance]], [[Fulminator Mage]], [[Grist, the Hunger Tide]], and [[Culling Ritual]].

This is a highly flexible fifteen: three removal spells for aggressive creature-combo decks, two Force for artifacts and enchantments, Thoughtseize for combo and control, and a collection of overlapping one-ofs. Maindeck Liberator lets the deck interact with an early [[Blade of the Bloodchief]] or [[Grafdigger’s Cage]] without needing sideboard access, while also providing a green creature target for Zenith.

How Yawgmoth evolved this week
#

The strongest signal is continued preference for uncomplicated Golgari/Bowmasters builds, rather than another new engine. Athenani follows Moorehardcore’s October 11 success with Bowmasters and no Chord, the blue [[Consign to Memory]] splash, or the Mole Man/Icetill lands package. The distinguishing card is maindeck Outland Liberator, a sideboard staple that is moving into game one to address artifacts and enchantments in the field.

Aggregated card-choice data across 53 published Yawgmoth lists from September 25 through October 24 still shows three Yawgmoths in all lists, three Ballistas in 91%, at least three Insights in 83%, and at least three Rumbles in 77%. [[Orcish Bowmasters]] appears in 62% of builds, with three copies in 32%. [[Shifting Woodland]] appears in just 11% of these lists. These are adoption figures in a selected window, not measurements of which configuration is intrinsically better.

Athenani’s two Zeniths are below the most common three-copy setup, but not unprecedented. The maindeck Outland Liberator is less common: it appears in only a small minority of aggregate lists, making it the specific slot worth testing this week.

Current opposing metagame
#

In the most recent 14-day Modern metagame snapshot, Broodscale is 8.6% of decks, followed by Rakdos Aggro 6.7%, Izzet Prowess 5.9%, Izzet Metalcraft 5.1%, and Rakdos Phoenix 4.5%. The Rakdos strategies have risen especially quickly; this is a reason to reassess fast-interaction counts, though it is not yet independent evidence that any Yawgmoth-specific sideboard bullet fixes those pairings.

The October 21 League’s published 5-0 lists were particularly concentrated: five Broodscale Combo lists among 25 published lists (20%), and five black-red lists (20%). This is a biased successful-list sample, not the total tournament field, but it reinforces how much of the testing effort should involve Broodscale and aggressive black-red opponents.

Decks pressuring Yawgmoth
#

The following percentages are from a recent MTGDecks trailing matchup snapshot; each is a Yawgmoth win rate and includes its sample size. These figures are useful directional evidence, not precise matchup probabilities.

MatchupYawgmoth winsMatchesPractical preparation
[[Eldrazi Bloodchief Combo]]37%67Instant-speed disruption; expect Broodscale-style combo and mana acceleration
[[Izzet Prowess]]39%44Fast creature interaction; consider three Fatal Push
Esper Blink30%30Threat pacing, recovery after sweepers and exile removal
Izzet Affinity / Metalcraft30%27Two Force of Vigor; artifact/enchantment bullet main
Esper Reanimator45%29Keep Endurance access but do not distort the entire sideboard
Amulet Titan22%9Ashiok, disruption and a fast clock; small sample
Living End38%8Endurance, Jailer and discard; small sample
Ruby Storm14%7Thoughtseize / Vexing Bauble / Damping Sphere; small sample
Boros Energy70%23No evidence for extra dedicated hate

A separate Broodscale-side dataset from September 19 to October 18 recorded 27 wins, 11 losses and two draws for Broodscale against Yawgmoth. That is roughly 70% of decisive matches for Broodscale, though the source and period are different from the table above. Broodscale and Eldrazi Bloodchief names can cover related or overlapping builds; do not combine their samples as independent observations.

The strongest practical test priorities are therefore Broodscale/Eldrazi Bloodchief, Esper Blink, Izzet Metalcraft and Prowess. For Broodscale, preserve instant-speed ways to answer [[Basking Broodscale]] or [[Blade of the Bloodchief]], and respect that the deck can also win through large colorless threats. Against Blink, avoid committing all engines before a sweeper; against Prowess, prioritize early defensive plays over slower setup hands.

Sideboard cards: what evidence actually supports
#

Among 53 recently published Yawgmoth lists, [[Force of Vigor]] appeared in 100%, with two copies in 94%; [[Fatal Push]] in 92%, with three copies in 51%; [[Endurance]] in 89% of sideboards; [[Thoughtseize]] in 87%; [[Ashiok, Dream Render]] in 83%; [[Abrupt Decay]] in 77%; and [[Vexing Bauble]] in 72%. These figures measure how often successful or published players register the cards—not standalone sideboard win-rate improvement.

Athenani’s 3 Push / 2 Force / 2 Thoughtseize setup matches the needs of the unfavorable matchup cluster. The maindeck Liberator improves access to artifact/enchantment interaction without using another noncreature sideboard slot. [[Soulless Jailer]] and Endurance preserve coverage against graveyard decks, while Ashiok has multiple applications against search effects.

There is an important opposing-sideboard development: Broodscale decks are overwhelmingly playing [[Grafdigger’s Cage]] (99% of tracked sideboards), [[Nature’s Claim]] (98%), [[Trinisphere]] (94%), and Vexing Bauble (92%); [[Pithing Needle]] appears in 77%. Cage is especially dangerous because it stops creatures entering the battlefield from the library or graveyard, interfering with [[Green Sun’s Zenith]] and undying. Plan to answer Cage proactively with Force or Liberator, and do not rely on an unanswered Cauldron activation through Needle.

New-card watch
#

There is no verified newly emerging printing and no compelling new purchase this week. The sole consequential change in the best fresh classic Yawgmoth list is maindeck Outland Liberator, a card already present in established Yawgmoth sideboards. No other card in the October 21 trophy warrants a new acquisition.

Last week’s [[Arasta of the Endless Web]] remains a single-pilot experiment and does not appear in Athenani’s successful list. The blue Consign splash and land-recursion engine likewise have not received fresh independent confirmation this week. There is no reason to buy more of the deck’s familiar core or make speculative acquisitions solely from this result.
