Moorehardcore produced another classic Golgari Yawgmoth 5-0 in the October 31 MTGO League, following a 5-0 on October 25. The difference between those two trophy lists is exceptionally small but informative: the October 31 deck has 4 [[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]] and 2 [[Orcish Bowmasters]], replacing the October 25 split of three Yawgmoths and three Bowmasters. Both use 4 [[Malevolent Rumble]], 3 [[Dredger’s Insight]], 2 [[Green Sun’s Zenith]], no [[Chord of Calling]], and no land-recursion or blue-splash package. Their sideboards are identical.
This is evidence that the fourth Yawgmoth is still a viable choice, not proof that four is optimal. Moorehardcore also finished 2-4 in an October 31 Modern Challenge. The current MTGDecks 30-day Yawgmoth win rate is approximately 45%, and the largest unfavorable matchup samples remain Esper Blink, Izzet Affinity, Eldrazi Bloodchief, and Izzet Prowess.
There is an important classification trap this week: Rack’s October 28 League 5-0 and Challenge Top 8, and AwesomPossum’s October 31 Challenge third place and League 5-0, are Samwise/Birthing Ritual builds with only one Yawgmoth. They are not successes for the classic Cauldron/Ballista shell and should not be merged into this report’s results.
Recent successful classic Yawgmoth lists#
October 31#
4 Yawgmoth, 2 Bowmasters, 4 Rumble, 3 Insight, 2 GSZ; identical sideboard to October 25 trophy
MTGGoldfishOctober 25#
3 Yawgmoth, 3 Bowmasters, 4 Rumble, 3 Insight, 2 GSZ; same remaining 74 cards as October 31

MTGDecks lists two first-place Yawgmoth’s Hospital submissions by Nagaya Kazuki at Hareruya daily tournaments on October 26. The listings do not establish field size or match count, and the complete card-level contents could not be independently checked for this pass. They are supporting evidence of local activity, not comparable to large-event or League performances. Archetype listings.
Exact comparison: Moorehardcore’s two trophies#
The October 31 list plays 4 [[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]], 3 [[Walking Ballista]], 4 [[Agatha’s Soul Cauldron]], 4 [[Badgermole Cub]], 4 [[Delighted Halfling]], 4 [[Young Wolf]], 4 [[Malevolent Rumble]], 3 [[Dredger’s Insight]], 2 [[Green Sun’s Zenith]], 2 [[Orcish Bowmasters]], and 1 [[Grist, the Hunger Tide]]. It includes one each of [[Endurance]], [[Formidable Speaker]], [[Ouroboroid]], and [[Strangleroot Geist]].
It has no Chord, Mole Man, Icetill Explorer, Shifting Woodland, or Breeding Pool. The mana base is conventional Golgari, with three [[Spymaster’s Vault]] and the normal fetchland/shockland structure.
The full sideboard remains 3 [[Fatal Push]], 2 [[Force of Vigor]], 2 [[Ashiok, Dream Render]], 2 [[Thoughtseize]], and one each of [[Abrupt Decay]], [[Culling Ritual]], [[Endurance]], [[Outland Liberator]], [[Soulless Jailer]], and [[Vexing Bauble]].
The exact one-for-one maindeck adjustment between the two 5-0 lists is +1 Yawgmoth / -1 Bowmasters. There are plausible advantages on each side: a fourth Yawgmoth increases direct access to the namesake draw engine, while Bowmasters improves early interactive pressure. A pair of League trophies cannot identify the better choice, but it establishes that the fourth Yawgmoth can succeed in the contemporary shell.
How Yawgmoth changed this week#
The strongest finding is continued success with a streamlined, no-Chord, no-splash Golgari build, not the appearance of a new engine. Three Insights and four Rumbles remain viable together, and two GSZ is sufficient in Moorehardcore’s configuration.
The fourth Yawgmoth is a genuine reversal of the recent three-copy norm. In the earlier September 25–October 24 DeckSnipe sample of classic Yawgmoth lists, only about 8% included a fourth. One trophy is not enough to infer a format-wide shift, especially as the same player also had a 2-4 Challenge finish on October 31.
Recent lands-package and blue-Consign builds did not receive new strong classic Yawgmoth finishes in the inspected period. Their absence from this week’s benchmark does not invalidate them; there simply is no fresh evidence to upgrade them above conventional Golgari.
Decks pressuring Yawgmoth#
The current MTGDecks trailing matchup table gives the following Yawgmoth win rates. These are not all one-week samples; their sizes determine how much weight they deserve.
| Opponent | Yawgmoth win rate | Matches | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Esper Blink | 29% | 31 | Severe and relatively well sampled; removal and sweepers |
| Izzet Affinity | 29% | 28 | Severe; artifact pressure and fast development |
| Eldrazi Bloodchief Combo | 37% | 67 | Most substantial negative sample; combo and mana acceleration |
| Izzet Prowess | 37% | 41 | Large unfavorable sample; early removal critical |
| Amulet Titan | 20% | 10 | Concerning but much smaller sample |
| Ruby Storm | 22% | 9 | Very small sample; proactive disruption |
| Living End | 29% | 7 | Very small sample; preserve graveyard interaction |
| Esper Reanimator | 44% | 27 | Somewhat unfavorable |
| Boros Energy | 63% | 24 | Favorable in this sample; do not over-allocate hate |
Broodscale is the single largest metagame presence, at approximately 13.1% of Modern decks in the current 30-day MTGMeta sample. Broodscale also won an October 31 Modern Challenge. Its combination of [[Basking Broodscale]], [[Blade of the Bloodchief]], colorless acceleration, and [[Urza’s Saga]] rewards interaction that can hit creatures and artifacts, but the Eldrazi and big-creature backup plan makes pure combo hate insufficient. The Broodscale percentage is a metagame share, not a direct Yawgmoth-versus-Broodscale win rate. Broodscale overview; October 31 Challenge.
For practice, prioritize Eldrazi Bloodchief/Broodscale, Esper Blink, Izzet Affinity, and Izzet Prowess. Against Blink, avoid exposing the entire engine to one sweeper. Against Prowess and creature combo, mulligan toward hands that affect the board before turn three. Against artifact decks, preserve instant-speed interaction rather than relying entirely on sorcery-speed land hate.
Sideboard cards with the strongest current evidence#
[[Force of Vigor]] remains the most stable artifact/enchantment answer. All 53 classic Yawgmoth lists in the September 25–October 24 DeckSnipe sample played it, and 94% used two copies. Moorehardcore continues with two. Between Broodscale and Affinity, cutting below two would require a strong local metagame reason.
[[Fatal Push]] is similarly supported: 92% sideboard adoption in that earlier sample, with three in 51%. Moorehardcore keeps three, and the current Prowess/Eldrazi Bloodchief matchups justify the slots.
[[Ashiok, Dream Render]] and [[Thoughtseize]] are the broadest combo-and-search package. Two of each appear in both Moorehardcore trophies. Ashiok is particularly relevant to Amulet and searching; Thoughtseize serves control and spell-based combo as well.
[[Endurance]] has remained reliable graveyard coverage, one main and one side. [[Outland Liberator]] is useful as tutorable artifact/enchantment removal; it is in Moorehardcore’s sideboard but not maindeck this week. [[Abrupt Decay]], [[Culling Ritual]], [[Soulless Jailer]], and [[Vexing Bauble]] round out the successful broad board.
These are success in inclusion and repeated adoption, not estimates of the cards’ independent contribution to match win rates. The available published data does not isolate those effects. The earlier sample showed sideboard adoption of 83% for Ashiok, 87% for Thoughtseize, 89% for Endurance, and 77% for Abrupt Decay. DeckSnipe archetype data.
New cards and current testing priority#
There is no verified newly emerging classic Yawgmoth card this week. The important change is a single copy-number swap between known staples: fourth Yawgmoth versus third Bowmasters. The earlier [[Arasta of the Endless Web]], [[Spore Frog]], [[Bridgeworks Battle]], and [[Consign to Memory]] experiments are not promoted by this week’s best classic results.
The cleanest next test is Moorehardcore’s 4 Yawgmoth / 2 Bowmasters against the 3 Yawgmoth / 3 Bowmasters version, keeping the other 74 cards unchanged. Test game-one hands and sideboarded games separately against the four prioritized matchups. The current evidence is insufficient to justify acquiring any new card solely for Yawgmoth.
